I broke down again

I broke down again this morning. Since it is Saturday (as well as Shabbat), I went back to sleep after taking my dog out. And I had a dream that my mother was back with us, living among us as a family. I keep having dreams like this, but this one felt the most real. Usually when I have dreams like this, there’s usually a sinister undertone. Like something that is not my mother is wearing her face. But this felt so real. I could hear her voice, noticed the little quirks in her facial expressions that only she could make. And most of all, I felt her warmth when I hugged her and told her how much I loved her and missed her. And everyone was so confused. We were overjoyed that she was back but were so confused because we had already buried her and spent the past month experiencing an intense grief like we never felt before and finally accepting all of this for her to walk back into the house, looking healthier than she ever did when she was alive and telling us that she came back simply by “trying her hardest to wake back up.”

And as confused and as we all were, we were so happy. We were all so eager to readjust our lives so that she could easily reintegrate after her month long slumber. I kept thinking “it’s all going to be okay now. My mom is back. I’m going to make plans to go to the park with her and have lunch with her.”

And then I woke up. I was alone in my bedroom. My mother was gone.

I haven’t cried in two weeks. I felt like I was finally accepting what had happened and that I could finally get on with my life. The first week or so after she died, I was just bursting into tears at random throughout the day. While doing household chores, while at the grocery store, while out walking my dog. And it would be loud, nerve wracking sobs. But as the month went on, that didn’t happen anymore, even when I was visiting her grave at the cemetery every Wednesday.

This morning was like that first week all over again. The sheer emptiness at having what I had longed for ripped away when I could feel the warmth of it in my sleep. I haven’t been able to stop crying all morning. It feels like I’m back at square one.

I was playing around with my Ed and Izzy Sims with what was available to me with the base game and mods (Anadius deleted all his work late last year so I have no way to download the DLCs). And I took one of my favorite screenshots, removed the background, and pasted them in front of me Queen Anne’s Revenge flag… it’s giving off late 80s pirate romance novel vibes. I’d love to write something as trashy for this ship.

So I have decided to take back up doodle drawing... where I draw and color just because it's so relaxing I drew this while spending the day outside and was very happy with how it turned out, I decided to post it here.

I was kind of expecting leaving tumblr to make me feel sad. Maybe a little empty. But it doesn’t. For the first time in what feels like a long time, I feel relieved. Like all I can think is “I’m free, I’m free, I’m free!”

I got up early this morning, made coffee, and went outside on the front porch and my stepdad and I watched the sun rise. Things are still somber and sad without my mom but it feels like everyone is starting to heal.

And burying myself in social media wasn’t helping with the healing like I thought it was.

I added some graphics and stamps to my profile. It looks so cool and vintage and Old Internet.

I ended up deactivating on Tumblr. Again. Honestly, at this point, I have stopped counting how many times I have done this because I always ended up crawling back each and every time. But this time, I plan to stay away for good.

The final straw for me was when two of my closest friends ended up deactivating and it felt like I just didn't have any purpose to stay on there anymore.

I kept thinking of reasons to stay. I was no longer active in the OFMD fandom on Tumblr since I had a large chunk of the fandom blocked, as they do me. I was very active on Jumblr and that was my main reason for staying. Because Jumblr was the best online Jewish space I had ever been part of. In times when online queer spaces were rife with casual antisemitism and more right wing online Jewish spaces were rife with casual queerphobia, Jumblr gave me a place where I could be both unapologetically Jewish and unapologetically queer. But all of my Jumblr friends are all in the same dedicated Discord server so I no longer had that excuse to cling onto.

The other reason being that I was able to find pirated shows and movies that I couldn't find anywhere else. Sure, I have websites like Sflix but people would upload high quality episodes and movies to their Google Drives and share the links to Tumblr, and I felt super grateful to the community for that. I have all these links saved (and downloaded to my computer) so I don't really have a reason to stay unless I was thinking of looking for something something new.

So I just decided to deactivate. It felt a lot like sucking the snake poison out. Tumblr has been poisonous to my mental health for a long time now but I kept clinging on because I guess I just really enjoyed having a sense of community and belonging. And I guess it provided a nice distraction with all the grief I've been going through this past month. But there are other places to get that sense of community. Places that don't feel like I'm playing a slot machine on what's going to ruin my day next.

Today was actually a very peaceful day, and I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. I ended up sleeping in later than I should have. Which is fine, I guess, since today is Sunday. I didn't sleep very well last night and when I did fall asleep, I ended up having very disturbing dreams. But I have become so used to disturbing dreams the past month, and I usually try to forget them upon waking to keep from dwelling on them.

I had decided to just spend the day offline and dedicate it to reading and drawing, maybe spend some time outside. I spent the day catching up on reading the fanfics that I had downloaded to my e-reader. I did spend a little bit of time outside but it was so hot, I eventually had to come back inside and take a cold shower to cool down. For some reason, the air conditioning isn't working and I had to open the window in my bedroom and put my box fan in the window sill to cool things down.

But I spent a few hours just... not even glancing at my phone. It felt good, like I was just able to exist, stare out at the woods surrounding my house. Reading the fanfics that I downloaded with the same concentration as I would a physical book.

I managed to get through the day without breaking down crying thinking about my mom. I got most of that out last night before bed.

It kind of made me realize how much I was burying myself in the internet (Instagram and Tumblr specifically) to try and distract myself from the hell that has been going on since August 15th. And today, for the first time in a really long time, I felt healthy.

Now that I have logged back on, I have decided that I would like to spend less time on social media. I have Dreamwidth for blogging, Discord for keeping in touch with friends, Newgrounds for looking at art (sometimes I'll log in to Bluesky to see what my friends in fandoms are drawing), and AO3 for finding new stuff to read. I have decided that outside of Jumblr (Jewish Tumblr), I really don't want to spend much time on Tumblr anymore. I ended up blocking a bunch of people last night. Many people who I used to interact with regularly.

I have a few shows that I am going to binge watch: Xena Warrior Princess (I promised [personal profile] jentaurstrings I would watch that in return of her watching Our Flag Means Death), The Pitt, What We Do In The Shadows (I watched the movie the other night and it was hilarious, gave me a much needed laugh). Oh and of course I need to start Black Sails from the beginning (I was halfway through season 1 when my mom passed). I think I might also do another rewatch of OFMD since that is my ultimate comfort show.

I'm permanently stepping away from the Tumblr fandom though; I really should have lurked more before jumping into the online fandom because this has to be the absolute worst fandom I have ever been part of. The only fandom I have been in that was worse than this was the WWE fandom and I noped out of there pretty quick when I saw how my best friend was being harassed.

The drama surrounding this fandom is already a couple of years old by now and I came here two and a half years after the show ended. But reading through the archives of the evidence of harassment that went on while the show was still airing is... mind boggling considering that many of these Tumblr blogs are now pretending that they've always been super nice when they spent two years being absolutely awful. I'm still going to be writing and reading fanfic. But I'll save my meta to be posted on my Dreamwidth.

Overall though, I don't regret it because I have met some amazing fanartists and fanfic writers here. I just wish I had trusted my initial instincts and stayed away from Tumblr. But good things did come out of it. The amazing fanartists I've met in the Canyon. The fact that I was able to pirate the entire series thanks to some absolute sweetheart uploading the episodes to Google Drive. So there's some good things too.

I am slowly making progress on the fifth and final chapter of The Demon I Cling To. I'm getting back into my hobbies. I drew some Jewish EdIzzy fanart for Rosh Hashana. One of these days, I am going to get a decent digital drawing tablet so that my coloring does not look like it was done by a child.
